2.4/30 “WE BRAKE FOR BOTANICAL GARDENS”

* * * * CALLIANDRA ERIOPHYLLA

Off at 4:30 am to avoid joining the sea of commuters parked in parking lots 4 to 6 lanes wide and 10’s of miles long. It was a successful strategy on another account as well: I had gotten by Griffith Gardens in L.A. and Huntington Gardens in Pasadena before Jean woke up. (She usually travels Pullman when we leave early.) She was starting to think about the LA County Arboretum when we came to Santa Ana Gardens in Claremont—I didn’t make it by that one!

FREMONTODENDRON
Three hundred flower pictures and five hours later, she staggered out for food & drink. The pictures were excellent as you can see.
* * * * * * OENOTHERA HOOKERI

The I10 took us to a Flying J in 1000 Palms where I took my only photo of the day—a colorful sunset over the big rigs cooling their wheels for the night.
Will I get by the Living Desert Gardens in Palm Desert on day 3? Don’t bet on it! (It has nice animals too.) 200 miles, 301 pictures— a good day!
